Stripes is a sound installation whose physical setup consists of four piezoelectric film speakers that hang from the ceiling in a circular configuration. The sound synthesis method that creates the sonic content is based on a non-standard form of digital waveguide synthesis. Unlike standard forms of digital waveguide synthesis, the delays vary over time and they do so independently from one another. This approach does not try to imitate the sound of a musical instrument nor does it model an existing physical property. The delay times are controlled by a random algorithm and their changing over time, sometimes quick, sometimes slow, creates different timbres and rhythmical gestures and textures.
