DanceScapes is a dance performance that employs an interactive swarm simulation for controlling the visual processing of video footage. A grid structure that conforms to visual features of the footage affects and is affected by the swarm's movements via forces of attraction and repulsion. The changing grid causes the color channels of the video footage to shift relative to each and thereby gradually increase the incoherence and abstraction of the resulting visual material. The intensity of these changes and the directionality of the shifting is affected by the dancer's movements. DanceScapes was premiered at the Vortragssaal of the Zurich University of the Arts in 2011.
